It is of utmost importance to the Maine potato industry to reduce the usage of pesticides while producing high quality crop yields. The interest in this effort has been in response to consumer, environmental, safety, marketing and financial concerns regarding pesticide usage.
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Potato IPM program was initiated in the early 1970's under a special USDA grant. Today, the program has developed into a sophisticated multidisciplinary approach for controlling potato pests. It is coordinated by James D. Dwyer, Crops Specialist, and Dr. James F. Dill, Pest Management Specialist, with aditional support from Dr. Steve Johnson, Plant Pathologist/Crops specialist and Dr. Matt Kleinhenz, Crops specialist, two full time technicians and 30 seasonal workers.
This web site has been designed to provide growers with yet one more means of obtaining pest related information. Insect and blight information will be updated regularly to provide the most accurate information for particular potato growing areas in Maine. Feature articles will also be published regarding current conditions for certain growing areas.
