Aroostook
County, has long been one of the premier potato producing regions in the United
States, but in recent years, agri-business has expanded to include broccoli and
other crops. The total harvested cropland in 1997 was 142,015 acres. This consisted
of 65,454 acres of potatoes. Nearly 22,000 acres of hay crops, more than 47,000
acres of oats and barley and 7,356 acres of vegetables, including broccoli, peas
and more.
Gently rolling hills covered by some of the richest
and deepest top soil found anywhere in the world make this a region well-suited
for a variety of crops. Many of the County's agricultural products are processed
locally to create a variety of potato and other vegetable products from french
fries to frozen peas. |
